A pre-poo is the abbreviation of the word pre-shampoo. A pre-shampoo is a treatment applied to the hair before shampooing/washing. Pre-poo treatments can be done with oil or with a conditioner.
Benefits of pre-poo treatments…
- helps in detangling hair
- nourishes scalp and roots
- protects fragile ends of hair
- keeps moisture locked into hair while washing
- prevents shampoo from “stripping” natural oils from hair
Pre-pooing with oil
First select a carrier oil that works best with your hair. Examples of carrier oils that work well for pre-poo treatments include: extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and my personal favorite, grape seed oil. Divide your hair into 4-6 twists. Untwist each section one at a time and apply oil from root to tip before re-twisting. Place a plastic shower cap over the hair for 30 min. Shampoo/wash hair as usual.
Pre-poo with conditioner
Select a water based conditioner that is easy to spread throughout your hair. To check if your conditioner has water in it, read the ingredients on the product. The first ingredient should say “distilled water.” Follow the same steps as if you were pre-pooing with oil. Shampoo/wash hair as usual.
Which is better for a pre-poo, oil or conditioner?
Oil is the best option for a pre-poo because it is inexpensive and readily available in local grocery stores. I am able to purchase are large bottle of oil and use it continuously for months. Conditioners can be expensive—especially if they include organic, vegan, or natural ingredients. Inexpensive conditioners can contain synthetic ingredients that coat the hair and conceal damages in the hair structure. In contrast, oils condition and nourish the hair naturally.
